As most of us know “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” only few recognize its full impact on humans and space exploration.
The space race was known as the tension between the United States and Soviet Union to better each other on developing spacecrafts and most importantly innovating them so they can explore more of space. Yuri Gagarin, who was a Russian cosmonaut, was the first human to go to space with the help of the Soviet Union which was achieved in 1961.
Some thought that the Soviet Union won because they were the first to go to space and back to Earth with a spacecraft even after the United States launched many probes that even reached the moon and collected data.
However, the United States outdid the Soviet Union by doing what many thought was impossible at the time. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first people to step on the moon which ultimately led for many to now claim that the United States won the space race. Even with declaring victory, the rest of the world did not give up and instead felt inspired to innovate and better the United States in terms of space exploration.
Of course, the United States did not give up in their exploration of the Moon. In the following decades all twelve of the people that visited and stepped foot on the moon were american. Still, though, it should be in the best interest of the world to keep on visiting the Moon because in 1982 a meteorite from the Moon landed on Earth in Antarctica. Though the Moon may be friendly it is important to keep an eye on upcoming threats from any object in proximity to Earth.
Overall, even though the United States proclaimed victory many times in space exploration, it is not held against the rest of the world as they too have made remarkable progress and achievements in space exploration.
